Hey y’all! I’m Valerie and I appreciate you taking the time to check out my blog! I started this blog to document my journey as I figure out how to manage having a career, being a wife and a mother all at the same time. I definitely was not prepared about a year ago when this all happened, but I’ve learned so many valuable lessons and tools along the way. I hope to help educate other working moms my age about ways to have balance while juggling so many different tasks at one time. Keep on reading to learn a bit more about me, my blog and my family!
1. I did things a bit backwards
By backwards I mean, in the way that I was raised, you get married and THEN have children. Welp, around April of 2016 I found out I was pregnant. My then boyfriend (now husband) and I were absolutely shocked. We both just graduated from Texas Tech a few years prior and we were both in the midst of establishing our careers. Marriage and children were a topic of conversation but we had plans to travel, establish our careers and live life a bit before having children. That all changed when we had our sweet son Zuhri on December 7, 2016.
We had our rough patches and were still healing from old wounds from college, and we just had a lot going on, to say the least. Long story short, we got in touch with a couple of old friends from college that had been in a similar situation and they gave us hope to move forward and start a family. We got engaged in early 2017 and we got married in Houston, TX on June 7th.
Being a Christian and growing up as a PK (preacher’s kid), I was definitely embarrassed and knew that I’d probably be judged. I quickly got over that and decided to just use my story to help and encourage others.
2. I love to write
Most people don’t know it, but I actually love writing! When I was younger I always had dreams of being some type of writer or journalist. When I got to college, I soon realized the journalistic path was NOT FOR ME. I write to vent and express my feelings easier. Journalism was just to restricting. After switching my major about …oh three times or so, I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Marketing. Starting this blog has been a great way for me to fill my void and write without anyone telling me how to format and write!
3. I have a marketing degree but I work in the HR field
Raise your hand if your career is different from what you studied in college…
While in college I had a part time job in the Human Resources department of my University. That was my first introduction to the HR field and from there I went on to have an internship and my first job opportunity out of college in the HR industry. I absolutely love what I do! I often get random inquiries to help people with resumes and how to prepare for job interviews. I’m excited that my blog will include some tips to finding a job, as well as ways to balance having a family and trying to move up the ladder in corporate America!
4. I’ve learned SO SO much in the past year
There are soooooooo many things that I’ve learned in EVERY area of my life. Everything from meal planning to organizing to work-life balance. With all of the changes in my life that I’ve encountered in such a short amount of time, I had to learn real quick! The more I learn, the more I’ve felt like I should share with other women my age (I’m 25 by the way). Especially those women who believe it’ll be almost impossible to have a family and work at the same time. Guess what…It’s totally doable (is that a word?)! It’s hard, but is to help you navigate and teach you some of the tricks I’ve learned that make my life 10x easier.
Well, that’s enough about me! I’d love to learn more about my readers. Feel free to comment below and tell me a bit about yourself.
